Shigurui (Japanese: シグルイ, 'Death Frenzy') is a Japanese manga series by Takayuki Yamaguchi, based on the first chapter of the novel Suruga-jō Gozen Jiai.
Summary and Preview At the beginning of the Edo Era, when people enjoyed a time of peace, Lord Tokugawa Tadanaga decides to hold a fighting tournament. In the past, matches were fought with wooden swords, but this time real swords will be used. The one-armed Fujiki Gennosuke and the blind Irako Seigen will fight each other in this tournament, even though both of them are disciples of Iwamoto Kogan--known as Japan's greatest swordsman. Both are determined to prove himself the Iwamoto school's proper successor; however, there can only be one champion.
So begins the story of intertwining fates, conflict, and strange destinies.
Well, I haven't seen Shigurui yet, but I highly doubt it even comes close to the perfection that is Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal. All a matter of taste though. I've heard others spout on about Sword of the Stranger being superior to Samurai X and Samurai Champloo. I didn't even really like Sword of the Stranger.
Also, Ruruoni Kenshin the series is very entertaining although not gory. And Samurai 7 was pretty good too, especially the second half. Bleach has Katanas, but it's a superpower shounen, if you're into that, it's great, well at least the Soul Society and Espada Arcs.
But yeah, I'd say Samurai Champloo would be second best on my list, but I see you've already seen it. Avoid Samurai Deeper Kyo, Basilisk, and Ninja Scroll series at all costs. I too have heard that Vagabond is the best and most popular samurai manga by far, haven't read it though. I'll watch Shigurui next. I've heard a lot about it.
