Savage Arms Serial Number Lookup
The Savage Model 24 was introduced under the Savage name in 1950 (previously sold under the Stevens brand 1938-1950). Savage introduced a date code in 1949 that consisted of one or two numbers and a letter in a 1/4' circle located between the trigger guard and the hinge pin.
Metal Drum Kit Fl Studio Download. The letter is the date code; i.e. A=1949, B=1950, C=1951, D=1952, etc. This date code system continued in use until 1970.
Serial numbers were not required on long guns until January 1, 1969, when the 1968 Gun Control Act went into effect. I do not believe that the early Savage Model 24's were serialized. There are no records to give an exact date of manufacture from that time frame. The letters and numbers you list are either inspector or assembly marks that have no meaning outside of the factory. I've seen dozens of them in private hands.
Nov 7, 2013 - My date code indicates a 1954, but has a serial number LOWER than his. Did Savage release them/make them out of serial number sequence? How likely is it for a 699,xxx rifle to be made a year after a 701,000 rifle? Were the serial numbers connected to the caliber? I don't recall if he listed his caliber. Everything from prototype 99's chambered in 30-06, to prototype receivers and stocks of different shapes intended to prevent stock cracks behind the tangs, to prototype chamberings for the 219's, to a prototype 99EG in 35 Rem, to you name it. Savage had no problem in selling off prototype guns, usually after they stopped making that model. Binaural Plugin Pro Tools.
Quite a R&D guns were sold off out of the factory in the late 80's when Savage Arms almost went bankrupt. The Larue gun store in New Hampshire and Kittery Trading Post in Maine were two stores that handled many of them. With that stamp, I would think it is indeed an R&D gun. I wish I had the info handy to give you on how to letter a Savage gun, but it changed about a year ago and I don't know what the new way is. Now, if you want an idea for a value for an R&D gun. I have absolutely no idea. I've seen plenty of them, but all in collector's hands and only a few for sale - and I don't recall seeing any actually sell.
If you live near a Cabela's, they will give you a free estimate for the value if you take it in - but I'm not sure they'll be doing more than guessing. Probably other stores will do so also, but I'd call ahead and check first. Cool gun, thanks for providing pictures! If I find the info for lettering Savage guns, I'll try to remember to come back and post it here.
There was an R&D ledger, according to a mention by the Savage historian. But it wouldn't be complete given that Savage dates back to 1894 and encompasses a lot of different firearms. Lot more than 36 out there.
A friend of mine owns Savage lever action rifle #1, I've seen r&d military musket, I've seen r&d's having stock changes to try to keep Savage 99's from getting the cracks behind the tang, I've seen r&d 99's in 30-06, know of r&d 1920's chambered in 30-06, r&d 99 chambered in 284 (internals differ on 284's from other cartridges), r&d pistols, etc. So what yours is, is probably #36 in the R&D ledger that Savage was keeping in the 60's/70's. Here's an early R&D gun from somewhere between 1906 and 1917 where they tried creating a built in peep on the stock. Thank goodness this stayed as R&D.
